RELATED SUBREDDITS:. Other Subreddit you should check out:. I didn't see any actual recommendations for safes after searching through this subreddit, globally, and is dead. I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit!
I bought a harbor freight safe, and it is one of the cheap ones that you can hit the top and the spring on the solenoid is too weak so you can open it with the right timing. I need to dump it and get another safe. I keep my medicine in it, very valuable medicine, and very valuable coins. I have looked around craigslist locally and most are very large or don't have the keys/combinations. So, any recommendations on safes under $300?

A lot of answers, few addressing your question specifically- but the pistol safe idea is a good one. Is a piece of crap, but it's $20, and the six pack you offer a good friend to bolt it to the slab in a corner of your closet will cost you only a few more dollars. (Drilling through the bottom of the box will void the fire integrity of the container, but you're mainly concerned with theft.) Now, that's what we call Security Through Obscurity: if your brother finds it, he can lever it open with a crowbar in seconds. Its theft resistance is nearly nil. It's the location that counts. Another security through obscurity one is the You could keep your pills in one of those or a book safe, and stow it somewhere they won't think to search.
With a bolt-down kit will come in well under $300, and be a bit more of a pain-in-the-ass for bubba when it comes to stealing your goods- it's still a toy safe, and he can still break into it with a bit of determination and mess. Plus, you'll owe your friend two six packs of beer instead of one for the molly bolts and rocking it into the slab. My recommendation would be to stop by a local safe and vault place, lay out your budget and see what their recommendations are- even if it's nothing more than a box with a Medeco high-security lock that you can bolt down into the slab or something like that. My recommendation would be to stay away from anything with biometrics, digital locks, etc. As they simply don't have the reliability of all-mechanical locking devices like keys and combination locks, except for the really high-end stuff which most people won't pay for.
