OP, unfortunately Steam has been accepted as acceptable DRM. I held off from buying any Steam games as long as I could. However the holiday/weekend sales are sometimes to great to pass up. That and when I bought a retail copy of DoW2 and Empire Total War Steam was forced upon me anyway.

To answer your question doesn't Steam allow you to run the game in offline mode? There should be a setting in the preferences or options. I don't have Steam on this system so maybe someone else can give you better directions. Even if you can I'm not sure its any faster.

If you have a shortcut to a Steam game on your desktop or start menu, steam will load the game instantly after loading itself.

I fail to see how this is noticeably slower than launching a non-steam game from a shortcut. If steam is taking longer than 10 seconds to load, something is clearly wrong or your hardware just isn't up to par. A lot of people actually use Steam to manage their non-steam games as well because it gives them a consolidated game list. I keep Steam running 24/7 anyway, clearly you don't.
