PeaExtractor is a simple, novice-friendly spin-off from PeaZip free zip utility project, and it is built on same proven Open Source components, providing support for easy extraction of 180+ archive types: 7Z, ACE, BZ2, CAB, GZ, ISO, RAR, TAR, ZIP format and many more. The program also allows to easily perform less basic functions, like extracting encrypted files, join spanned multi volume archives, and to try to unpack unknown file formats applying extraction routines of supported archive types, in example it can disassemble most of Windows DLL and EXE, Compound, MS Office, and Open Office files types. Unlike full-featured archive managers as 7-Zip, PeaZip, WinZip, WinRar and similar utilities, which provides an explorer-like GUI (with file compression and archive browsing/search features), PeaExtractor is solely focused on decompressing archive files in the shortest, simplest way, and provides an easy to use, minimal, very intuitive GUI, requiring little user interaction. Those packages contains only free, Open Source software under OSI definition, and it does not contain any third party sponsored offers. PeaExtractor is freeware and it is released under LGPLv3 license, free of charge for any use (personal, professional, business, government.), modification, and distribution.
Portable version, not requiring installation and not modifying host system (not modifying file associations), is availablefor both for Windows and Linux platforms, it is recommended as easiest way to deploy the application: simply extract the package - i.e. With Windows' Compressed Folder unzipper - and start peaextractor executable. Initial version of PeaExtractor, derived from pealauncher component of PeaZip, free archiver written with Lazarus/FPC.
Step 1: Open archive file Open PeaExtractor and drag the file (a single.rar, or.zip, or.7z, etc archive) you want to extract on it. The software allows to take any kind of file as input, as it can attempt unpacking files with unknown extension trying to handle them as variants of known archive structures - that way in example PeaExtractor can disassemble compound container files as Office / Open Office formats, and some types of exe and dll files. first alternative, click 'select file' to select input archive using a standard file selection dialog. second alternative, click 'search' to activate a standard search dialog; search result can be dropped to the application for extraction Alternative to step 1: system's context menu (only for Windows installable versions) Rightclick on the desired input archive, from PeaExtractor context submenu chose 'Extract.' To be prompted extraction options (step 2).
Otherwise, click on 'Extract here' or 'Extract here (in new folder)' for directly start the extraction process without being required for other interaction (step 3). As PeaExtractor works on a single archive at time (but more instances of the program can run simultaneously), the context menu is shown only when a single file is selected. Context submenu is featured as group on Windows 7 and newer systems (option is available during software's installation). Step 2: Extraction options and password Once the input archive is selected in step 1, PeaExtractor shows an option screen to customize decompression task, once needed options are set confirm extraction with 'OK' button. ZIP format allows different cryptography standards, PeaExtractor supports ZipCrypto (legacy archives), PKZip's AES-based encryption, and WinZip AE. Keyfile filed is optional and can be activated if it is needed to decrypt a file created by PeaZip (.7z,.arc,.pea,.zip) using two-factor authentication encryption.
Step 3: Archive extraction Once decompression is confirmed, progress dialog GUI is shown as actual extraction process takes places. The task can be paused or cancelled from buttons in the lower area of the application. Input and outptut directories are clickable, to open them in system's file explorer. Change program's language Click the hamburger menu on the top right corner of the application, 'Localization' entry opens translations directory, clicking on a language file will apply it changing program's language. On Windows installable versions 'System context menu language' opens directory of reg files, which translates the context menu entries.

Change or remove file associations (Windows installable packages only) File associations, so far, can be changed only running setup: file associations screen prompts a selection of supported known file extensions that can be selected or deselected. If de-associating a file extension does not restore your previous file association with a custom program, you should usually run again your custom program's setup or file association procedure, in order to let said custom program take care of re-registering the file association in the way it expects and needs to work. Alternatively, Windows's standard 'Open with' dialog can create custom associations.
If you don't want to change file associations, you can de-select all of them during the installation (a total exclusion checkbox is provided), or else use Portable version which does not modify the host system. Create an archive PeaExtractor project is focused solely on de-compressing (unzipping) existing archives in the most simple and user-friendly possible way, like pure extraction software as RarZilla, ExtractNow, or RAR Extract Frog. PeaZip free file archiver, from same author, is recommended as free general purpose archiving utility, providing the ability to create, edit and convert archives. Extract/join a.001,.R01,.Z01 file (multi-volume spanned archive) PeaExtractor can join a split file (file separated in chuncks of pre-defined size with utilities like HJSplit, or Unix 'split' command, in example to make each part smaller than mail attachment or upload size limit), and can as well extract most types of spanned archive - archives split on a set of multiple volumes each containing part of the input data.
You need to have all parts of the archive (usually you can check progressive number in file extension) saved into the same directory, then select for extraction with PeaExtractor the first volume of the set (the one with lowest progressive number, i.e.000 or.001), and all following volumes will be extracted as well. Hint:.R01 usually stays for spanned RAR files, and.Z01 stays for spanned WinZip.ZIP file, while 7Z can be commonly found as raw byte-to-byte split file with.001 extension: in any case start to unzip first volume, the one with '1' numerator in extension. Extract ACE file WinAce team provides a royalty-free dll (Windows) and so (Linux) for reading and extracting ACE archives, but being closed source software it cannot be included in main PeaExtractor packages, which contains only Open Source components.
To handle ACE files with PeaExtractor you need to separately download and install UnAce Plugin from PeaExtractor. Extract RAR5 file PeaExtractor supports extraction (unrar) of RAR5 standard out of the box from release 1.2. Extract TGZ, TBZ, TAR.GZ, or TAR.BZ2 file TAR format, very common on Linux systems and other Unix derivates (as Android) provides only archiving features (consolidate multiple input file and their metadata in a single output archive), without providing compression, so it is usually chained with Gzip, BZip2 or other forms of compression (recently, 7-Zip's XZ). Compressed TAR archives can be found with single file extension (tgz, tbz, taz, txz.) or double file extension (tar.gz, tar.bz2, tar.z, tar.xz.). Extracting a compressed TAR archive with PeaExtractor is a two step process, as first extraction will uncompress the actual TAR file, and the second passage will unarchive the data embedded into the TAR container.
Extract ZIPX file PeaExtractor fully supports new compression algorithms (PPMd, LZMA) WinZip introduced in ZIPX standard, but does not support some of the additional proprietary algorithms employed for some special cases (usually for optimized multi-media data compression), so it is generally possible to unzip WinZip's.zipx files but some incompatibilities can be encountered. Open the archive for browsing or searching, to check if it contains what I'm looking for PeaExtractor is a pure file extractor and lacks archive browsing/searching options of full featured archive managers as WinRar (shareware), WinZip (commercial), 7-Zip or PeaZip (both free and Open Source). PeaZip, from same author, is the recommended choice if a powerful archive explorer, and more advanced file and archival management features, are needed.
Run as administrator (Windows) Option to run the application as administrator should be available rightclicking PeaExtractor executable. Alternatively click the hamburger menu (top right corner of the GUI), and select 'Run as administrator'. In this way the program will be able to extract files to reserved paths, which otherwise would end in error due to missing file writing credentials.
